Thinking about the seasons...

When Springs comes around, after a dull Winter, it always brings bright colours, sweet scents and so many different shapes to play with.

My favourite flower is a tulip, although I don't have a favourite variety, I love them all!

They continue to grow even after their stems have been cut, which is why you get those long, crazy, wild stems (although you can re-cut them over and over again if you prefer to keep them neat, and there is the penny in the vase trick which I'm yet to try...). There are lots of different varieties of daffodils and narcissi, ranunculus, hyacinth and muscari, plus the beautifully scented genista (or broom), pussy willow and blossoms.

My favourite wedding florals to create, have a strong seasonal theme. In the last few weeks I've been lucky enough to work with two couples who really wanted to go for a strong Spring theme with their flowers.. they both looked gorgeous and were really in keeping for the time of year!

Speak with your florist about using seasonal varieties in your wedding florals; flowers are often cheaper during their normal growing season, which will therefore give you more budget for variety and depth in your bouquets, buttonholes and arrangements. Your florist will also be able to suggest different options to tie in with your ideas; a lot of brides choose gypsophila for example, but genista, mimosa and blossoms work really well as a filler flower for a Spring wedding.

By using seasonal varieties, your flowers will also look like they belong.. when people see peonies for example, they will automatically think of summer, however, if you saw a bridal bouquet filled with red berries, dark holly and cones, you would think of winter.

As a florist, you often get asked what your favourite season is. I'm not sure I really have an answer... as each season comes, I fall in love with the flowers it brings all over again.
